About our name

Close
The Kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra) is a tropical tree which grows in Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean, northern South America, and tropical west Africa. A somewhat smaller variety is found throughout southern Asia and the East Indies. The tree grows to 70 m (230 ft), with trunks up to 3 m (9.8 ft) in diameter above the extensive and distinctive buttress roots of the tree, which can extend out from the trunk as much as 20 meters (65 feet). Ceiba pentandra is the national emblem of Guatemala, Puerto Rico and Equatorial Guinea. It appears on the coat of arms and flag of Equatorial Guinea. The Kapok tree is also known as Araba in Yoruba, Safed semal in Hindi and Randu in Bahasa. In Tobago it is known as the Silk Cotton tree.
